My Great Basin bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva) Experiment
I've been growing some Pinus aristata (Rocky Mtn Bristlecone) from seeds at 900 ft elevation and they seem to be doing great. They are growing about as fast as my JBP.

Bristlecone pine? | Bonsai Nut
This weekend I'm making a trip to the Bristlecone pines in the White Mountains-oldest living thing in the world. I'm very excited to see these beautiful trees. I hope no one would ever try and collect one of these-at least the really old one's that I'm going to see. But, does anyone use these...

Bristlecone Pine - Bonsai Nut
A bristlecone was among the first trees I ever played bonsai with. A 5 year old seedling started by my mom. Being so early on it was probably poorly transplanted and in poor soil. It lasted another 5 years without dropping a single needle or growing a single bud, then it died. No winter protection on the ground in zone 3 all that time.

Bristlecone pine? - Bonsai Nut
Anyone with any experience with Bristlecones? I just picked up a decent one at GSBF and before I wade in and starting removing needles I thought I'd ask. It is my first Bristlecone, and I love the needles and what appears (to me) to be rather profuse back-budding (on old bark and trunk). Any...

I'm looking for 5 or more Bristlecone pines minimum of 12" tall but 24"+ would be better. Anybody have any? PM with details please. Thanks

Back Budding Conifers? - Bonsai Nut
Pines - generally if you want back budding you must keep enough green needles on the branch you prune back. They will bud back - some well, some are reluctant. Japanese black pine (JBP) buds back relatively easily. The white pine group (5 needle pines) are very reluctant to back bud and will not tolerate removing buds leaving needles on a branch.

The thing is, with bonsai and bristlecone pines, I don't believe there is a way to recreate a thousand years or so of struggle and injury in a human lifetime with a tree you grow or collect. You may be able to simulate it. This book, The Bristlecone Book, points out the importance of injury in the development of the incredible aspect of these ...

Bristlecone Pine training info - Bonsai Nut
Visited Ryan Neil yesterday (saturday)largely to see Yamadori Bristlecone he has from Todd Schlafer (First Branch Bonsai). He has 3. Generously Ryan answered a few questions while watering and teaching 6 or 7 students. REALLY busy guy. Big question could I call and get some info how to handle these? Big surprise Ryan said he didn't know.

Bristlecone will grow quicker with water and moderate temperatures, but they still will grow slower than limber pines and pinion pines in the same setting. "growing a branch to fill out here, or regrowing an apex there" will be long term projects, instead of just a season or two.
